Its name comes from the Arabic term\u00a0\u201cKarr-al-krak\u201d,<\/strong>\u00a0which means\u00a0\u201ccleansing of scourges\u201d.<\/strong>\u00a0It is one of the northernmost gateways into the Valle del Guadalhorce region and also borders on the Antequera region, which is connected to via Ardales.<\/p>\n Although there was also a settlement here in Spain\u2019s Islamic era, the current town dates to the nineteenth century. There you can find well-preserved historical sites and buildings <\/strong>which, despite their antiquity, can still be visited today and form part of the rich artistic and cultural heritage of M\u00e1laga province<\/strong>. But the most famous legacy left by the town\u2019s past is its\u00a0spa with its sulfur-rich waters<\/strong>,\u00a0which have countless therapeutic properties.<\/p>\n We know that in 1725 there was only one house in this area, known by the name\u00a0\u201cCortijo de Aguas Hediondas\u201d (The Farmhouse of Foul-smelling Waters).\u00a0<\/strong>However, the bathtubs found near the course of the spring, the tombs and pieces of pottery discovered in various parts of the town and, above all, the remains of a wall, suggest that Carratracawas inhabited during the period of Roman rule.In that era, the soldiers bathed here to cure their battle wounds, due to the curative power of the waters, which are rich in sulfur, calcium and magnesium. But it was the Arabs who named this town, located in the foothills of the Sierra Blanquilla.<\/p>\n Within its municipal boundaries, in a pit cave reaching over 130 feet below the ground, schematic paintings and archaeological remains belonging to the Eneolithic (or Copper) Age<\/strong> have been found.
